2017 SCNU Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Guidance
“Confucius Institute Scholarship” program is established by Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban (hereinafter referred to as Hanban), for the purpose of training international Chinese fans into qualified Chinese-language teachers and facilitating dissemination of Chinese culture. To fulfill the scholarship nomination,Hanban authorizes oversea Confucius Institutes (or independent Confucius Classrooms) and Some Chinese Language Test Center as agency to recommend outstanding students, scholars and Chinese language teachers to Chinese University(Receiving institution) for admission.
I. General Eligibility
Non-Chinese citizenship
Aged between 18 and 35 (Applicant currently working as a Chinese language teacher shall not exceed the age limit of 45.)
In good health condition
One-academic-year program is not applicable to those who have been studying in China. One-semester program and four-week study program are not applicable to those who have ever been to China. Four-week Study program is only open to Confucius Institute registered students and teachers.
“Chinese Bridge” (Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students) Winners who have been awarded the 2017 “Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate” can apply for admission according to the scholarship specified in the certificate.
II. Scholarship programs and Requirement
1. Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)
Type of Scholarship: full scholarship or partial scholarship
Maximum program duration: 2 academic years
Enrollment time: September 2017
Requirement:
1) Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.
2) Applicant must have passed Intermediate Level HSKK Test(Score over 60).
3) To apply for full scholarship, applicant must score over 210 in HSK Test (Level 5); for partial scholarship, applicant must score over 180 in HSK Test (Level 5).
4) Applicant who is able to provide the notarized employment agreement in advance on a teaching position after graduation from the MTCSOL program will be given prior consideration.
2. One-Academic-Year Study Program
Courses of Chinese language and culture are provided to students and scholars who intend to work on Chinese Translation, Study of Sinology.
Type of Scholarship: full scholarship or partial scholarship
* Full scholarship or partial scholarship will be granted to applicants based on the comprehensive consideration of their HSK scores and demographic factors in a first-come-first-served way.
Program duration: 11 months
Enrollment time: September 2017
Requirement:
1) Applicant must score over 60 in the Intermediate Level HSKK Test;
2) Applicant must score over 180 in HSK Test (Level 4).
3. One-Semester Study Program
Type of Scholarship: Full Scholarship
Program duration: 5 months
Enrollment time: either in September 2017 or March 2018
Requirement for different courses
3.1 Training courses are provided to international Chinese teachers, Confucius Institute registered student who is going to pursue undergraduate study of Chinese, and undergraduate students of Chinese language. Applicant must score over 210 in HSK Test (Level 3), and must have HSKK test report.
3.2 Chinese courses of Taiji technique and culture are provided to fans of Chinese culture and with related academic background. HSK test report is required.
4. Four-week Study Program of Taiji technique and culture
Eligibility: Confucius Institute registered students and teachers only
Type of Scholarship: Full Scholarship
Program duration: 4 weeks
Enrollment time: either in July 2017 or December 2017
Requirement: HSK score report is required.
III. Admission Procedure
1. For application, please log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarships website (http://cis.chinese.cn) to register, complete the Confucius Institute Scholarships Application Form online, and upload the scanned copies of relevant supporting documents.
2. Authorized by Hanban, Confucius Institutes (independent Confucius Classrooms) in different countries, some Chinese language testing centers, are working as recommending agency to engage in the applicant selection, materials review, connection with host institutions, and collecting and handing over applicants’ documents to host institutions.
3. Once application materials are verified by the Division of Scholarships of Hanban, SCNU will then review the qualification of the applicants and submit the admission list to Hanban. MTCSOL applicant will be required to be interviewed on-line by SCNU.
4. Hanban will conduct an overall assessment of all applications and admit applicants on the basis of competitive selection. Normally, the admission results will be announced within 45 working days after the application materials are confirmed as valid and complete.
5. After applicants’ scholarship status is confirmed, SCNU will post “Letter of Admission”, “Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China" (JW202 Form), copy of the scholarship certificate and other relevant documents to the recommending institutions within 15 working days.
IV. Application Documents for Confucius Institute Scholarships
Recommending institutions and host institutions should examine the completeness, validity and accuracy of applicant’s name, nationality and permanent address on the passport. If the following documents are not in Chinese or English version, notarization documents should be provided.
Part 1. For all applicants
1. A scanned copy of the passport photo page. Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit notarized certificate of entrusted legal guardians in China.
2. Score reports of the HSK, HSKK(in two-year validity). Winners of the finals of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions may submit the award certificate and the “Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate”.
3. Recommendation letter signed by the head of the recommending institutions (please provide objective comments on the applicant, including whether the applicant is a student of Confucius Institute or with other academic or professional background. Chinese language teachers shall submit an employment verification letter and a reference letter provided by the employer.)
Part 2. For degree scholarship program applicants(Applicants for degree programs should include documents listed in Part 1 and Part2 )
4. Notarized certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation), and an official transcript.
5. Applicants of MTCSOL program are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Those who can provide an employment agreement or related documents with the designated teaching institution will be given prior consideration.
*SCNU preserves the right to interview applicants in face or online. Other documents apart from those listed on<The checklist of application materials for Confucius scholarship> might be requested.
V. Scholarship Coverage, Criteria and Academic Assessment
1. Full scholarship coverage:
1) Tuition fee
2) Accommodation: students shall be accommodated in a shared room for two people, or be entitle to a monthly living subsidy of 700 Yuan RMB if living off campus with the permission. The living subsidy is given out by month or by quarter.
3) Monthly stipend: 2500 Yuan RMB/month for students of One-academic-year and One-semester study programs, 3000 Yuan RMB/month for MTCSOL students; stipend is not provided for 4-week program students.
4) Comprehensive group medical insurance
5) Chinese language proficiency test fees (HSK and HSKK): Reimbursement for once per year.
2. Partial scholarship coverage:
1) Tuition fee
2) Accommodation: students shall be accommodated in a shared room for two people, or be entitle to a monthly living subsidy of 700 Yuan RMB if living off campus with the permission. The living subsidy is given out by month or by quarter.

Reminder:
Enrollment status is based on semesters of host institutions. Students who are enrolled before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the admission month, are entitled to the full stipend of that month. Students, who are enrolled after the 15th of that month, are only entitled to half of the stipend.
The stipend for the month of graduation will be granted until half a month later upon confirming the graduation status by SCNU.
During the study, for any students who is absent from China of personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding legal holidays), the stipend will be suspended during absence. Stipend will be terminated in case of schooling suspension or dropping out for personal reasons.
Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the host institutions in accordance to relevant regulations on international students stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China.
MTCSOL students are subject to annual academic performance review. Only those who achieve outstanding records in academic and Chinese language proficiency are entitled to a full scholarship for the following year; those who achieve average academic records are entitled to partial scholarships; the others will not be entitled to scholarship any longer.
Students of One-Academic-Year Study program and One-Semester Study Program are required to attend Chinese language proficiency test before graduation. Test fee is reimbursed by SCNU.
VI. Disclaimer
1. Incomplete or unqualified applications will not be processed.
2. Applicants will be disqualified from application in case of application material is found fraudulent or application materials are completed and submitted by someone else.
3. Scholarship winners who cannot register with the host institutions on time should inform the host institution about the reasons in written form within 15 days before the admission date. For those who do not register as requested without reason, the scholarship will be canceled.
4. Scholarship will be canceled for those who fail to pass the on-site physical examination, drop out, or take schooling suspension during the study.
