Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics (WISE) is a research-oriented institute, which was founded in 2005 at Xiamen University as an initiative to modernize economics and finance research and education in China. WISE focuses on frontier research, high-quality teaching, and enjoys intensive international academic exchanges and cooperation. WISE has the following specific goals:

◆To publish research in top international and domestic academic journals; 

◆To enhance the curriculum design in all areas of economics and finance; 

◆To train young economists of academic leadership quality for China; 

◆To play an active role in policy making for central and local governments; 

◆To become a center for international academic exchange in economics and finance, particularly in south China and the Asian-Pacific region.

WISE operates under the leadership of an international advisory board formed by renowned scholars. These include the Honorable Dean, Professor Luolin Wang, a distinguished Chinese economist, Professor Gregory Chow, Emeritus Professor from Princeton University, Professor Jerry A. Hausman, the 1985 John Bates Clark Award winner from MIT, Professor Cheng Hsiao from the University of Southern California, and Professor Lawrence Klein, 1980 Nobel Laureate from the University of Pennsylvania.

So far, WISE has about 40 full-time faculty members who received their PhD degrees from renowned oversea universities, and 5 distinguished adjunct professors from North American universities who visit and teach at WISE regularly each year.

WISE has research strength in econometrics, statistics, finance, experimental economics, law and economics and other economic fields. WISE faculty can publish in some leading international academic journals such as Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Labor Economics, Annals of Statistics, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B, Biometrical, Econometric Theory, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, and among others. According to the Tilburg University Worldwide Economic Schools Research ranking, WISE associated with the School of Economics is ranked among the top 20 in Asia and ranked 4th in China in the number of publications in selected prestigious international journals in recent years.
