HBNU consists of 17 colleges, departments and 3 secondary institutes. It offers courses for 26 Master’s degree programs, 39 Bachelor’s degree programs and 18 diploma programs, covering 7 disciplines, including literature, history, economics, law, education, science and engineering. Currently there are some 20,000 full-time students in the university. HBNU also boasts a highly qualified teaching contingent of 856 teachers, among which, there are 102 professors, 238 associated professors, 80 with Doctor's degree, 380 with Master’s degree, many of whom enjoy high reputations in their respective academic circles in China.
The unviversity has 5 Brand Specialties in the province, which are Chinese Language and Literature, Education in Ideology and Politics, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. It also has 1 outstanding discipline, 2 characteristic disciplines and 5 key disciplines in Hubei Province, including Study of Literature and Art, Chinese Philology, Applied Mathematics, Optics and Analytical Chemistry. Additionally, 14 courses have been listed as the top grade courses at the provincial level.
The university library, considered as one of the several excellent libraries in Hubei Province, has a collection of books totaling over 1.45 million volumes and 3,400 odd kinds of Chinese periodicals and 40 odd foreign language periodicals. Moreover, “Journal of Hubei Normal University” (Philosophy and Social Sciences) is selected as “National Chinese Core Periodical”. Additionally, the campus network center of HBNU is one of the 38 PoPs of China Education and Research Network.
HBNU has always attached great importance to the integration of academic excellence and teaching and scientific research. In recent years, HBNU has presided 831 research projects, including those supported by the National Science Foundation and those subsidized by the Hubei Provincial Department of Education. In recent 5 years, HBNU has published 70 academic monographs and textbooks and 4,867 treatises, among which 315 treatises are indexed by some famous index systems, such as SCI, EI, and ISPT. So far the university has set up more than 50 laboratories, among which “Biochemical Analysis Technology Lab” is a provincial key laboratory, and there are three provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers in Electrical Engineering & Electronics, Chemistry and Biology.
Since its foundation, HBNU has already brought up 50,000 odd students who have been well appreciated by their employers and the society. For the new century, Hubei Normal University has set a goal to strive to run itself into a multiple-discipline university with the main feature of teachers’ education.
In recent years, HBNU has witnessed a boom in international exchange. The university has established cooperations with many foreign universities such as Florida Gulf Coast University in the USA, Brock University in Canada, Université Paris-Sud 11 in France, University of Tasmania in Australia, Waiariki Institute of Technology in New Zealand and organizations in Japan. The universtiy has been inviting foreign teachers, famous international scholars and experts to teach and offer lectures for the students and faculties since its foundation.
At present, HBNU provides the following long-term or short-term courses for the overseas students: Chinese Language, Literature, History, Culture, P.E., Art and courses in other specialties. HBNU warmly welcomes friends from all over the world for exchange, study and cooperation.
