  • Professor Wang Jinlan Reported Latest Research Results on Advanced Materials

Recently, the research group led by Professor Wang Jinlan of School of Physics SEU made great progress in the growth of van der Waals epitaxy of two-dimensional materials. The team proposed a new strategy to protect black phosphorus from degradation that is to use self-assembled organic monolayers by van der Waals epitaxy based on multi-scale simulation. The research result “Passivation Black Phosphorus via Self-Assembled Organic Monolayers by van der Waals Epitaxy” was published in Advanced Materials, top material advanced journal, Impact Factor 18.96.  In recent years, black phosphorus, a new type of two-dimensional semiconductor material consisting of elemental phosphorus, has attracted worldwide interest because of its unique physical and chemical properties. However, its fast degradation in the air hinders its practical application severely. Based on first principle and molecular dynamic simulation, and the organic molecule perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride as the representative of the study, the team proposed to a use self-assembled organic monolayer by van der Waals epitaxy to protect black phosphorus from degradation. Advantages of this method are that it does not break the original properties of black phosphorus and that it affords new idea of protecting other two-dimensional materials lack of air stability. First author of the study is Zhao Yinghe, doctoral students of School of Physics SEU. Professor Wang Jinlan is the corresponding author. The research is funded by The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Jiangsu Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Specialized Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education of China.

  • SEU is Selected as Top 10 Universities of Innovation in Chinese Mainland

On April 19 at Beijing, Standard Ranking and Urwork jointly released “the list of top 100 universities of innovation in Chinese Mainland” in which Southeast University ranks 10.

“The list of top 100 universities of innovation in Chinese Mainland” is intended to select universities which promote the progress of new technology, the development of innovation, the transition of economic structure and the upgrade of industry. According to Standard Ranking Research Institute, different from those ranking lists based completely or partly on subjective investigations, this list adopts original data from authoritative organizations. It assesses the innovation of universities in terms of their research capacity, innovation potential, academic level, and platform building. The original data include the overall and per capita research funds for science and technology, the number of national technology prizes, granted patents, valid patents, national patent prizes, the amount of disciplines ranking among the first 1% of global ESI database, papers published on top international journals, Nature Index, the quantity of high-level talents, key disciplines, and the number of national students’ innovation and entrepreneurship training programs.

The ten disciplines of engineering science, materials science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, clinical medicine, computer science, biology and biochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, neuroscience and behavioral science rank among the first 1%of global ESI database, in which engineering science ranks 45, and computer science ranks 65. During the past five years, SEU has won 17 national prizes for science and technology, ranking 7 among universities in China and the first in Jiangsu province. The number of granted patents remained the top 5 in China for many years. It ranked the first in Jangsu and the third nationwide in 2015. In 2016, the amount of research funding is over 2 billion, which ranks first among universities in Jiangsu.

  • SEU Students Won Prizes in the America Civil Engineering Competition for College Students

Recently, the American Civil Engineering Steel Bridge Competition for College Students, hosted by the University of Memphis, was successfully held at the Memphis International Agricultural Exhibition Center. Southeast University was the first time to attend the event. The team was composed by 12 students from the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Mechanical Engineering, Lin Zhiyi, Hu Haolei, Hua Yiwei, Jiang Yu, Meng Chang, Zhang Lei, Zheng Yichuan, Chen Liwei, Li Baoshan, Wu Xiu, Yang Xiuhui and Tan Xiaoming and was led by three teachers of the School of Civil Engineering, He Zhiqi, Zhu Mingliang, and Xu Zhao. Due to careful preparation and high level of perform, the SEU team successfully completed the presentation, on-site consolidation, size inspection, weighing, lateral loading, vertical loading, deflection measurement and other parts. The team attracted attention and gained many praise from other U.S universities because of beautiful shapes , reasonable design and smooth cooperation. The team won the First Prize of Stiffness Single Award, the Second Prize of Efficiency and the Third Prize of Weight.

The competition problem was design and construction of steel bridge. After the multi-round selection, the school chose the senior students as the main force, who were responsible for the design, production and installation of the steel bridge model. The junior students assisted the competition and contacted with the students organization of ASCE. The team members trained for more than five months before the competition. They were prepared for program selection, design optimization, model analysis, picture drawing, processing and assembling. The school attached great importance to this competition, and the Dean’s Office and the preparation work had support from the faculty and students of the School of Civil Engineering. The team was also supported by Professor Z. John Ma of the University of Tennessee and Professor Roger Meier of the University of Memphis.

The American Civil Engineering Competition for College Students is a historic event founded by the American Society of Civil Engineering (ACSE). The competition is the highest level of civil engineering competition of the U.S. It has ten events, including Steel Bridge, Concrete Canoe, GeoWall, Professional Paper and so on. Chinese Universities like Tongji University, Zhejiang University, Southeast Jiaotong University and Hehai University have participated in this competition. The 2017 competition have 15 teams. From this competition, the team members of SEU have strengthened their profession skills through solving problems, and improved their comprehensive abilities. At the same time, it is a great opportunity for our students to show their talent in an international stage.

  • Latest Research Result of the Team Led by Professor Sun Litao, SEU, was Published in Nature Communications

Recently, the research result of the team led by Professor Sun Litao of School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Electrically driven cation exchange for in situ fabrication of individual nanostructures was published in Nature Communications 8, 14889(2017), with Southeast University as the first complete unit. SEU, PhD student Zhang Qiubo and young teacher Yin Kuibo were co-first author. Professor Sun Litao and Professor Zheng Haimei of University of California Berkeley, were co-corresponding author.

Cation exchange is always used to synthesize nano-materials with more complex structure and compostion which are not easily obtained using direct synthesis techniques, and it has been recognized as a popular tool for the synthesis of heterogeneous nanostructures. However, the current cation exchange is difficult to control the synthesis of individual heterogeneous nanostructure. Therefore, it hinders the integrated processing and manufacturing of high precision nano devices in the future.

The research team first proposed an electrically driven CE process. By controlling the contact position of ion source, it is possible to selectively prepare and modify individual nanocrystals with complex structure (Fig.1) and precisely control CE process to synthesize heterogeneous nanocrystals in different degree (Fig.2). The team proved electrically driven CE process was an effective way to control the synthesis of heterogeneous nanomaterials. And it also provided a visual and direct basis for understanding the microscopic mechanism of heterogeneous structure during CE process, which made the process and preparation of materials and devices in nano-scale more clear, more accurate and more controllable.

This research is another important achievement in the series of work of Professor Sun’s team in the field of high precision nano-processing and characterization in recent years. The related results were published in Adv. Funct.Mater. (2016), DOI: 10. 1002/adfm. 201603897 (Impact Factor 15.23), Nano Energy 30,771 (2016) (Impact Factor 11.553), 2D Mater. 4, 011001 (2017) (Impact Factor 9.611) and other important academic journals. The research has been funded by the China Outstanding Youth Fund Project of the National Natural Science Foundation, and International Cooperation Key Projects and National Major Scientific Research Equipment Development Projects (11525415, 51420105003, 11327901, 61274114).
