Founded in 1956, Capital University of Business and Economics (CUEB) is the leading municipal university in the city of Beijing. CUEB took its current form in 1995 after the merger of the Beijing College of Economics and the Beijing Institute of Finance & Trade. Over the last 60 years, CUEB has grown into a modern multidisciplinary university with strengths in six major subject areas including economics, management, law, literature and science, and engineering, of which economics and management are its core disciplines.


CUEB’s department of labor economics is has been accredited as a key national academic program, and is a member one of the Ministry of Education’s Exceptional Key Disciplines Project. The departments of applied economics and statistics are both key first-class disciplines in Beijing, having been ranked 12th and 15th respectively among 88 universities, and 5th among finance and economics universities during the 3rd round of appraisal by the Ministry of Education. For the first time, Tilburg University ranked CUEB 9th for publications in top journals among all mainland universities. In 2013, CUEB itself is considered as a “national education base for ecological civilization”.


To date, CUEB has in total 18,664 registered students, including 9,764 undergraduates, 339 junior college students, 2,613 master’s degree students, 293 doctoral candidates, 582international students and 5,073 continuing education students. University admission scores are among the top for universities under the direction of Beijing City. Moreover, in recent years the university has witnessed an increasing number of students pursuing further education both at home and abroad, and the over 95% rate of employment for new graduates has earned the university an excellent public reputation.


With a total of 21 teaching divisions, CUEB currently has 1,474 faculty numbers, of which 894 are full-time teachers. Nearly 55% of faculty members have doctoral degrees and 162 are either full professors or equivalent, 333 are associate professors or equivalent, with 55 doctoral student advisors and 388 master student advisors. In 2006, the university initiated a teacher career development program and established the CUEB Office of Teacher Advancement (OTA), one of just a few programs of its kind in China. CUEB’s OTA is a teacher-governed organization dedicated to teacher career planning and advancement, the first of its kind in Beijing, and the “Non-administrative OTA Development Model” project is a second prize winner of the national teaching achievement prize.



The CUEB Academy of Metropolis Economic and Social Development (AMESD) is a collaborative research center in Beijing, encompassing two municipal level philosophy and social sciences research bases, the Beijing CBD Research Base and the Beijing Economic & Social Development Policy Research Base, as well as 31 university level research institutes including the Research Institute of Demography & Economics and the Research Institute of Capital Economy. CUEB publishes journals of great weight, including national core journals in Chinese–CUEB Journal, Economics and Management Research, and two CSSCI source journals.


CUEB has strong cooperative ties with over 60 universities, research institutes and social organizations in nearly 20 countries and regions. Since its first enrollment of international students in 1986, CUEB has enrolled 600-plus international students from over 70 countries every year, including doctoral, master’s degree, undergraduate, senior and regular non-degree students. The Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language Center was the first to offer an all-English master’s degree program in 2007 and doctoral program in 2011.
