1. Cultivation Aims
This program includes three majors: ancient Chinese literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Chinese philology, theory and criticism of literature and arts.
The research directions are: 1. history of development of the literature from pre-Qin to Ming and Qing dynasties. 2.developomeng of Chinese literature of 20th century. 3.modern Chinese dialectology and grammar. 4.literary criticism and methodology of 20th century, contemporary literature and the development of culture.
This program aims to cultivate qualified students who are well developed to lay a solid theoretical foundation in the Chinese language, literature and culture, acquire systematic specified knowledge and fairly good practical ability. They are also required to be able to undertake teaching, literature research and other social work.

5. Research and Thesis
5.1 After acquiring all the credits as required, candidates are eligible for conducting research on their theses.
5.2 Candidates begin the research work under guidance of their supervisors, conduct seminars on documentary resources, thesis preliminary conference and periodical reports on their theses during the second year. After consulting the discipline panel and obtaining the approval of the panel, candidates can start their specific studies and thesis writing. There must be 3 professors and associated professors attending the thesis preliminary conference.
5.3 Candidates must take part in the professor's research item. The thesis must be printed out and then submitted to the defense committee, which will make arrangement for the evaluation and defense of the theses.
5.4 The thesis writing should be conducted in accordance with "The Quantification Index on Research Achievements of Shanghai University for Master's and Doctoral Candidates."
5.5 The completed theses should be assessed and degrees conferred in accordance with "Regulations Concerning Academic Degrees in the People's Republic of China" and "Rules Concerning Academic Degrees in Shanghai University."
