Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations. Nursing is a popular field of study in China. As such, nursing education is offered at most of the major universities throughout the country, with programs leading to diplomas and certificates, as well as both undergraduate (bachelor) and graduate (master’s) level degrees. To qualify for admission into one of the many undergraduate nursing programs in China, students must, at minimum, possess a secondary school diploma and meet the university’s admission requirements, which may or may not entail an entrance examination of some kind.
Those students pursuing a Master of Science degree in Nursing must possess a baccalaureate degree in order to be considered for admission. Once admitted to the undergraduate nursing program, students are classified as nursing students and will be required to take approximately 240 credits over a four year span; credits that will cover both general education classes (mathematics, composition, science, social sciences, etc.) and nursing-specific coursework. The setting where a nurse works determines the specific tasks assigned to him or her. Nurses working in medical-surgical hospitals care for sick and injured patients. They perform tasks such as giving medications, taking vital signs, including temperatures, pulse and blood pressure. They also administer medications, including intravenous medicines. A nurse is required to document care given and the patient’s response in the medical record.
Those working in hospitals may specialize in specific areas of care, such as pediatric nursing, where they work primarily with children, gerontology, a field that focuses on older adults and psychiatry. Qualifications for working in the field include earning a degree or diploma and passing a state examination that leads to a license. The pathway to becoming a nurse can vary. A one-year program leading to a diploma helps one meet the qualifications to become an LPN. Those desiring to earn the RN credential can take one of three routes. There is the associate degree, which takes two years to complete at a junior college or community college. A diploma program is usually undertaken in a hospital that offers training. These programs are generally 2-3 years long. A bachelor’s degree is earned at a four-year college or university. It is also possible to achieve education through an online nursing degree program. Earning an online nursing degree allows a candidate the convenience of working toward the credential at home, work or where ever he or she can access a computer.
As with the other programs, the person who decides to study online will need to arrange for the clinical practicum. The clinical component is required in addition to courses such as English, biology, chemistry, nutrition, medical terminology, pharmacology and courses that focus specifically on the field.
Department of Nursing, Hangzhou Normal University is one of the nursing institutions with longest history in China, with nearly 100 years of nurse-training experience. A 4-year course of study is designed for students to gain the knowledge and skills in nursing field. Focus is given to the training of students’ innovation, critical thinking, problem solving and professional development. Certain training is also provided in nursing leadership and administration, teaching and research. Bachelor of Nursing in Science (for international students) degree will be awarded on satisfactory completion of the course. Graduates will be eligible to take the national certifying examination to become a registered nurse. Graduates would be capable of delivering safe and competent care in many areas of nursing practice. They should demonstrate nursing care that is informed, evidence based and respectful. Nursing is one of the most diverse health professions and provides employment opportunities nationally and overseas, in general and specialist areas and in areas of health care beyond the traditional hospital ward.
High-fidelity patient simulation will be systematically used to enable students to develop confidence in their practice skills within a safe and controlled environment. Case study will be integrated to offer students the opportunity to rehearse and enhance psychomotor skills.
Practice Placements
The school collaborates with three key hospitals for the programme, and these hospitals have qualified clinical mentor for overseas students. These placement areas are selected and monitored with caution to ensure that they are conducive to the achievement of the learning outcomes. The need for care to be delivered using research and evidence based practice is a core aspect of the curriculum. Awareness of this will be endorsed through the increase in the amount of time academic staff will spend in the clinical area, working collaboratively with clinical mentors in guiding and helping students.
Academic support for students / mentors in placements
A personal tutor will be named as Clinical Practice Facilitator for a group of students, in every placement, throughout the programme. Clinical Practice Facilitators will meet regularly with their students individually and in groups when they are in their practice placement areas. Two hours per student, per semester has been allocated for teaching/ facilitation of learning in the clinical area.
Assessment of practice
Assessment of practice will consist of 40% grading of overall performance. Each department will assess the theoretical and practical performance. Students must pass both components to pass the unit.

Processing time varies for different applications. For example to process a degree program application requires more time than a Chinese language application. Confirmation for Chinese language application by the admission office usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. However, time for degree programs application differs. For example fall semester application processing is after March, and it takes a period of 1 to 2 months. This also depends on your qualification and the number of applicants.
