1. Cultivation Aims
This program focuses on researches on bilingual dictionary
compilation, theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics and English
textbook compilation & evaluation. It aims to cultivate qualified
personnel who are capable of conducting studies in linguistic theories
and putting these theories into practice, and who are capable of
undertaking teaching and research work related to English.

5. Research and Dissertation
5.1 After acquiring all the credits as required, candidates are eligible for conducting research on their theses.
5.2 Candidates should present their topics of their theses, then collect both Chinese and foreign documentary resources, begin the research work under guidance of their supervisors, conduct seminars on documentary resources, thesis preliminary conference and periodical reports on their theses. After consulting the discipline panel and obtaining the approval of the panel, candidates can start their specific studies and thesis writing.
5.3 Theses must be written in accurate and smooth English as well as in good format, logic and organization, supported by full and detailed reference resources. The theses should convey the original and correct ideas of the authors, up to the requirements of being published. The 15000- to 20000-word thesis must be printed out one month prior to the defense and then submitted to the defense committee, which will make arrangement for the evaluation and defense of the theses.
5.4 The thesis writing should be conducted in accordance with "The Quantification Index on Research Achievements of Shanghai University for Master's and Doctoral Candidates."
5.5 The completed theses should be assessed and degrees conferred in accordance with "Regulations Concerning Academic Degrees in the People's Republic of China" and "Rules Concerning Academic Degrees in Shanghai University."
